Our Story
Brick by Brick began in 2024 when Daniel Lam, a seventh grader from Longmeadow, Massachusetts, realized just how expensive LEGO sets were. The cost put this toy he loved out of reach for many kids. It seemed wasteful for families to keep thousands of bricks stored in boxes, or sets gathering dust in closets, for years after their children had grown up. The thought of these everlasting plastic pieces being thrown in a landfill was even worse. Daniel wanted to give these bricks new life.
Like many LEGO fans, he had spent years using LEGOs to make his own creations. When he discovered an app called BrickLink, which allows anyone to create professional-looking, step-by-step instructions for custom LEGO designs, he realized he could make new LEGO kits that would look just like store-bought sets.
He began by making simple sets using his own LEGOs – a car, a spaceship, a house. He packaged these in boxes with color photos on top and a QR code to instructions inside. He donated his first ten kits to a local Ronald McDonald House and Brick by Brick was launched.
Daniel’s friends soon got involved and team planned their first brick drive at their school. Families were invited to donate their old LEGO bricks and the response was overwhelming; tens of thousands of LEGOs were donated. More LEGO-loving students joined the team, gathering regularly for really fun LEGO building sessions.
The adventure is just beginning, but for teens who love LEGOs and giving back, it’s going to be an exciting ride. Please consider joining us!
